EKU Counsel Earns Young Alumni Award
EKU alum and University Counsel Dana Fohl recently earned the Young Professional Award from the University of Kentucky Law Alumni Association. The award is given each year to a UK Law School graduate who has graduated within the past 10 years, and who has distinguished himself or herself professionally. The award is one of five established by the association’s board of directors to honor accomplished graduates.
The Somerset, Kentucky, native earned her undergraduate degree at EKU and set herself apart early on. She began building her leadership skills by participating in EKU’s nationally prominent Honors Program, Student Government Association and Student Alumni Ambassadors. Fohl graduated summa cum laude in with a bachelor’s degree in English, creative writing and went on to graduate in the top quarter of her class at UK’s College of Law, where she was the editor of the education-focused special edition of the Kentucky Law Journal and the recipient of a CALI Award for the highest grade attained in Education Law.
Her experiences at EKU and UK inspired her to combine her passions for education and law. After nearly five years as an associate attorney at Lexington law firm Bowles Rice LLP, where she created an education law practice group and represented area school boards, she returned to EKU as deputy counsel. In 2017, she was promoted to University counsel.
Fohl is also a recent recipient of EKU’s Young Alumni Award. In accepting that award, she gave credit to the faculty and staff she met during her four years at EKU for helping her find success.
“Sir Isaac Newton once said, ‘If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,’” Ms. Fohl said. “I met many of the giants in my life at EKU — people like Dr. David Coleman, Dr. Skip Daugherty, Jey Marks, Teresa Harbett, Cari Wallace, President Joanne Glasser and many others who saw something in me I had yet to see myself. They took me under their wing, and they helped me to see it, too.”
Fohl also serves EKU as an International Alumni Association board member and an instructor of higher education law in the College of Education.
